Christianity... it's not for everyone (#208)
Bible version used: NASV
I became a Christian because I came to believe that what the Bible says about Jesus is true. The eye-witness accounts of Jesus’ life, ministry, death and resurrection are as compelling as anything I have read--and the accounts of Jesus’ life are repeated in 4 major books of the Bible.
When Jesus walked on earth, he was well received by the people who had broken lives. They knew that what Jesus was bringing was for them. And it wasn’t just a promise of a happy ending to a miserable life after they
The smart and successful people of Jesus day were actually looking for a Messiah–but on their own terms. When they saw that Jesus wasn’t going to accept and endorse their politically correct ambition, they killed him.
What gives? What in the world did Jesus offer that was so good? . . . and is the offer still good today? . . . and for whom???
Many smart and successful people today are too busy to bother. Skeptics are still killing Jesus on university campuses (and even in some churches) because they will only accept Jesus on their own terms.
I wasn’t one of the smart and successful people, but when I became aware of my need for deeper spiritual meaning I became a seeker. Now I am a finder. (Truth be told, it was Jesus who found me.)
I found that Jesus offers abundant life no matter what life circumstances you are in. I am the door; if anyone nters through me, he will be saved . . . I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10: 9,10
I found that a key part of the abundant life is forgiveness. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross I can stand before God as one not guilty. My past has lost its power to spoil my present. For he rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13,14.
I found that Jesus offers himself and comes to live in all who seek him. Through my union with Jesus my ordinary life is transformed. His rule and his reign have begun in me. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through
the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1:3,4
I found that, because of my union with Jesus, I am free. I am free from a preoccupation with myself and my circumstances and am free to concentrate on God’s world and God’s work using God’s resources. And this union with Jesus will never end. In Romans 8:38 & 39 the Bible assures me that not even my death can separate me from Jesus.
Christianity is not for everyone. Jesus brought his message of the Christ-life to the losers because the winners didn’t have any room in their hearts for him. Jesus once said: “it is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:24
Whether you are a winner or a loser by today’s standards, this offer from Jesus is for you–and it is still valid.
If you want this Christ-life, get a Bible and read the Gospel of John or Mark. These books explain how God comes to us in the person of Jesus Christ, his only Son, who lived, died, and rose again so that all who
believe on him can have real life. Jesus can take care of your sin AND give you a brand new life. Don’t put it off. Give your heart to Jesus today!
