Did You Ever Carve a Pumpkinhead (#66)
Did You Ever Carve a Pumpkinhead for Halloween?
Did you know that a long, long time ago, these funny-looking carved pumpkins were supposed to keep evil spirits away? Can you imagine putting your trust in a carved pumpkin to keep you safe?
There is someone who does make evil spirits run away. He is called the light of the world. His name is Jesus.
Remember that candle you use to light your pumpkin? Jesus promises that anyone who follows him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
Jesus is more than the baby in the Christmas story. The Bible tells us that he is the son of God who came to earth to make us right with God. Because of sin and selfishness, our whole world was ruined, and someone had to make things right. Only God could do that, so he sent his only son, Jesus, to take the punishment for the sins and selfishness of the world. Jesus willingly offered himself as a sacrifice to bring us back to God!
And, unlike a pumpkinhead which quickly rots, after Jesus died on the cross, he rose from the grave and is now in heaven getting ready to return in power and glory.
This is good news for people who are sometimes scared or sick. We can quit trusting in pumpkinheads––or anything else we’ve been counting on––and put our trust in Jesus!
If you want to trust Jesus with your life, you can talk to him anytime, anywhere. Here is a prayer to get started:
Jesus, I put my trust in you. I am sorry for the things I do and say that are wrong. Thank you for dying for my sins and selfishness. Come into my heart and show me how to live. Amen.
