The Greatest Bridge (#147)
Bible version used: NIV
Mackinac Bridge Facts
Over 5 miles long, the mighty Mackinac hangs suspended on 760 foot twin towers that start 210 feet beneath the straits and continue over 550 feet above the choppy blue waters of Lake Michigan.
42,000 miles of wire comprise the two-foot thick cables that suspend 4 lanes of highway 150 feet above the Great Lakes ships. The center span sways in the high winds common to the straits.
Joining the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, a dream since 1887, required four years, 100 million dollars and cost the lives of several men who fell from the towering structure during construction. It is a tremendous engineering marvel.
Is the Mackinac the GREATEST BRIDGE?
The center span of the Golden Gate Bridge is 4,200 feet which is 400 feet longer than the center span of the Mackinac, so there are those who say it is the greatest.
Is the Golden Gate the GREATEST BRIDGE?
Bridges span canyons, bays and straits, but the GREATEST BRIDGE spanned a far greater gulf. The widest gulf in all the universe is that between God and man. That gulf has been bridged by God's own Son, Jesus Christ, who came to fulfill the dreams and prophecies of thousands of years.
The cost of the mackinac bridge was a hundred million dollars. The cost of bridging the gulf between God and man was far gretaer! If money could have done it, we might have been albe to raise enough. But salvation cannot be purchased so easily. The blood of a perfect man was needed to atone for sin.
...It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed...but with the precious blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:18, 19
Before the Mackinac bridge was built, ferries carried people across the straits. So, aren't there other ways to bridge the gulf between you and God? What about doing good, or going to church?
The Bible says there is only one way to God: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth: salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:10-12
This is good news! Those who seek God find that the gulf has already been bridged by Jesus Christ. You do not need to build that bridge--you simply need to walk it! Why wait? Turn from your old life, accept Jesus Christ for who he is and join the family of God.
If you are ready to walk that bridge to God, here is a prayer to get started:
"Jesus, I accept your sacrifice for me and I want to turn from my old ways and come to the Father. Come into my heart and help me walk with you every day of my life. Amen."
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ... For through him we have access to the Father. Ephesians 2:13-18
There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. 1 Timothy 2:5, 6
