PAID (#275)
“Mark PAID on that invoice will you please?”
It is an old custom – marking PAID on a bill.
Years ago, a deal wasn’t finished until the bill was marked PAID.
John 19:30 has an amazing statement by Jesus. They were the last words he spoke before he died. They are usually translated “It is finished,” but he used the local language meaning: the debt is PAID.
With that, the world changed. Our debt to God was PAID. The punishment due to us was cancelled. The curtain in the temple, symbol of the barrier between us and God, tore from top to bottom. Jesus paid our debt, and as a result, our relationship with God our father is restored.
God’s sword, slashing down on sinful mankind, was instead plunged into the heart of his sinless son who willingly gave his life for us.
What do you do when confronted with this unbelievable sacrifice? Do you turn away with indifference? Do you want to know more about this Jesus? Do you fall on
your knees and tremble? Do you worship the son who gave his life for you?
In one way or another, every book of the Bible points to Jesus’ atoning sacrifice and the moment he stamped PAID on our debt.
Hebrews 9:22 says that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
1 Peter 3:18 says that Jesus, although innocent, died for the sins of all us guilty sinners that he might bring us safely home to God.
Colossians 1:13,14 says that Jesus bought our freedom with his blood and forgave us all our sins.
Colossians 1:20 says that Jesus’ death on the cross has made peace with God for all who believe.
1 John 1:7 says that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from every sin.
Don’t let your statement be marked: INSUFFICIENT FUNDS. Turn from your sin, accept what Jesus did on your behalf, and give your heart to him in worship. Let Jesus mark PAID on your debts.
